We Kind of Knew It Was Coming...

I believe that there are some inevitable films that sooner or later come out in the cinemas destroying the originality of their inspirations. And although I did not have fun watching The Hangover, I know that most of you did. Somehow, people found it funnily realistic, persuasively absurd and simply enjoyable. Every singly one of those adjective does not apply to Hot Tube Time Machine.

I don’t like comedies, but the stupid trailer they had been showing in the cinemas seriously tempted me. I though it couldn’t be worse that the any other normal comedy and it the representation of the 80s might actually be quite funny. It wasn’t, because there wasn’t one. Yes, yes, we get the grip in the trailer about Michael Jackson being still black and people listening to music on tape recorders rather than iPods, but these is exactly the amount of bits from the 80s that we get in the full length version of the film. Yes, the characters have longish, weird haircuts when they look in the mirrors, but for us they will always remain ‘normal’. And yes, there is John Cusack trying so hard to be funny and failing big times.


I believe it was fun for the actors to make this film, because for most of them it was like coming back to the past. But for me it was simply not funny. People enjoyed it in the cinema, so maybe it’s just me not having any sense of humour, but I personally think that if some joke doesn’t work for the first time, it won’t work if you repeat it five more times. Unfortunately, this seems to be the ultimate scheme for script writing for comedies today. Some of them work, most of them fail, and Hot Tube Time Machine definitely proves that sometimes it isn’t even worth checking.
